Igor Jesus stakes claim to usurp Chris Wood as Forest convert to Ange-ball | Ben Fisher

Brazilian scored twice at Betis but Anderson was again the star in Seville, where dozens of away fans were treated to free drinks These are still early days but Igor Jesus’s first goal in the Europa League draw with Real Betis was another tick in the box for so-called Ange-ball, a brisk team move culminating in the Brazil striker converting from close range. The first half was particularly encouraging from Ange Postecoglou’s perspective, Forest peppering the Real Betis goal, a series of cutting moves proof his methods are working. But Forest have squandered leads in three of their four matches under Postecoglou. Why are they struggling to get over the line? They toiled against Betis with Nikola Milenkovic cramping up approaching the final whistle, while Douglas Luiz, influential for both goals, was withdrawn at half-time owing to hamstring soreness. Worryingly, Forest again seemed to lose momentum after making substitutions. “We’ve got to manage games, see them out – we’ll be in a better position if we start doing that,” said Forest’s captain, Morgan Gibbs-White. Football transfer rumours: Brentford exodus continues with Wissa to Newcastle?

Today’s rumours have left it late Being on a pre-season tour can make or break a player’s future. Yoane Wissa has left Brentford’s after the club turned down a £25m for his services from Newcastle, as he is eager to have a natter with the head honchos at the Gtech Community Stadium to sort out his future. The forward wants to test himself in the Champions League and does not want to be held back by something as minor as a club being unwilling to pay his full valuation. It is anticipated that the Magpies will up their offer in the coming days to a fee in the region of £30m plus add-ons. The Bees are not particularly keen on losing another striker days after selling Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United. Mateo Joseph has told Daniel Farke and Leeds that he wants out of Elland Road. The Spain Under-21 striker did not travel with the rest of the squad for their pre-season jaunt to Germany. Joseph was the subject of a bid in excess of £10m from Real Betis but Leeds want more for their young striker. “He came to me and to us and said that he wants a new challenge and would like to have a move,” Farke said. “He has also hinted that he prefers a move to Spain due to his Spanish roots. And yes, obviously that was more or less his call.” Continue reading...

Pellegrini and Betis familiar pawns in Maresca’s search for winning move

Chelsea can become the first English team to win all four European trophies – and much of their manager’s strategy is rooted in chess Now for the bonus prize. After the joy of achieving their main goal for the season by securing a return to the Champions League with victory against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, a triumph that led Enzo Maresca to narrow his eyes, dial down the charm and tell critics of his young side to “eff off”, there is little pressure on Chelsea’s men before they attempt to lift the first piece of silverware of the BlueCo era by beating Real Betis in the Uefa Conference League final on Wednesday night. The stakes are low. The opponents look awkward but vulnerable. For Chelsea, the sense is that this is one to tick off before they rejoin Europe’s elite. After all, they are aware they have been a strange presence in the Conference League. This is not a place for a squad built at a cost of over £1bn. The financial reward is minimal and prestige is not on offer. Chelsea, who were champions of Europe four years ago, are hardly going to be feted if they win a tournament that Uefa invented for sides operating on much smaller budgets. Continue reading...
